This time, as I wrote, I would vote for O’Donnell in the general election (in this race, I would have voted for Castle in the primary…reluctantly, very reluctantly). It is too important of an election and every vote in the Senate counts. At least O’Donnell will be a reliable vote against the administration’s policies whereas Coons will rubber stamp anything the administration proposes.
And as you probably know, I think you are right about the teaparty – while their impact has had an overwhelmingly positive influence they probably overreached in DE. I certainly wish the DE teaparty had found a better candidate; however, Rubios, Millers and Browns, etc don’t grow on trees.
As an aside, who knows maybe O’Donnell will turn out alright. She is relatively well spoken and seems to handle the media well. One thing I have learned during this election season is that if everyday individuals are encouraged to run (which is a good thing) they are not going to fit the typical politician mold (which is a mostly good thing) – so I am learning not to hold them to as high of a “standard” as I might otherwise.
A second and third aside: (1) Perhaps O’Donnell can make it close and force the DNC to expend money in DE as opposed to other states – other than a win it is the best case scenario; and (2) I don’t think the attempt to demonize O’Donnell or tie the teaparty (in a negative way) to the GOP will have much influence nationally - the Democrats are seriously misreading the electorate.
This 2010 election is fascinating – unlike anything I have ever seen.
